Solar Analytics is an international software startup at the forefront of the tech industry. Their policies for attracting, hiring and retaining women are a breath of fresh air, in what is traditionally a male dominated environment. Not only have these techniques helped to secure a productive team, but they have also contributed to creating an enviable company culture. In this two part series we chat to CEO, Stefan Jarnason and Senior Project Manager, Cindy Hung about women in technology.
Go to the internet and there are scads and scads of tips telling you how to win that job, how to nail the interview. Generally these well intentioned missives centre on things like:
- Promote your strengths and manage your weaknesses
- Maintain eye contact – Don’t mumble – Don’t be nervous
- Be assertive – Sell yourself
- Show your ‘action’ persona
These days, a recruiter may receive hundreds of job applications for one position, so it’s more important than ever to stand out from the crowd. But regardless of your skill set, it can be difficult to remain memorable when one role can attract hundreds of applications, and when your first point of contact is normally via email or digital submission. An interactive, animated or visual representation of your experience could be the perfect option.
Wendy Ginn has been an employee at Mantech for over 18 years, managing the complex financials for the company, their contractors and staff. During this time, she has seen the industry evolve and adapt to technological advances, but has herself remained a constant, choosing to return after having her two children. Here she talks about the benefits of longevity working for one employer, work-life balance and flexible employment.

This experience was not only a welcome break from the working week, but a valuable chance to build camaraderie and working relationships outside of the office. It was a chance to relax in an incredible environment at the Sheraton Mirage and experience some things that we never would have normally done as a family.
Daniel Versick recently approached Mantech looking for work in R&D and systems programming. He is well spoken, highly accomplished in Linux and offers 15 years’ software experience.
Ultimately, he would be an ideal employee at any company lucky enough to have him, but following his recent emigration from Germany, where his extensive software skillset was in high demand, he was surprised at the subtle differences between the two countries’ industries.
